ELK: Look to Arizona, and New Mexico to produce
the trophy class bulls. Arizona areas 8 and 10 for the rifle hunters and area 9 for
archers. New Mexico has good bulls but private ranches abound, contact New Mexico dept. of
fish and game
Idaho is still a good producer of trophy class heads with rifle units. 29, 37A, 30, and
30A leading the way 80 - 85% public lands makes for good accessibility. Its a tough draw
with a rifle but some areas can be hunted with a bow with general tags.
Don't ever leave out Montana, although the best hunting is by draw with rifle and bow,
such as units 410, 621, 622, 623, some truly whopper bulls are still and always will come
out of the big sky country.
MOUNTAIN GOAT: Although more expensive to hunt, one need not apply all over the
country to hunt goat. The best and biggest goats reside in Alaska or B.C. with the nod
going to B. C. The world record came from the area around Smithers B.C. and all the
surrounding area is full of goats. I took my 9 inch Billy within spitting distance of
where the record goat was harvested and I'm here to tell you there are more world records
still roaming those craggy cliffs. If you want to apply in the lower states the best bets
are Montana and Idaho respectively.
ANTELOPE: Once again Arizona and new Mexico rule the roost, most areas are good,
you just need to start applying and putting in your time. Wyoming and Montana are good for
numbers and good bucks are taken every year. Nevada's herds are starting to bounce back so
look for them to get back in the swing of it.
MULE DEER: It seems every year a new big buck spot is found, do some research. Look
to B.C. Wyoming, Utah, Colorado is bouncing back with the new antler restrictions, the
Kaibab in Arizona is legendary for producing monster mulies with both bow and rifle. Same
old thing, get your name in the hat.
BLACK BEAR: Two words, Alaska. Canada. I've hunted Canada and shot a pope and
young, class bear the first day, after seeing 10 bears. While I was Grizzly hunting in
B.C. on another occasion I counted over forty blackies in seven days of hunting. A buddy
of mine hunts Alaska and he's got the same stories. He took a boar that scored over 22
inches in the pope and young records.
MOUNTAIN LION: Nevada, Utah, Idaho. Any where its still legal to hunt with hounds. |
